Reading and Phonics

Reading is an important skill that all children should master before they leave primary school. At Grovelands we put a lot of emphasis on learning to read as it allows a child to access the rest of the curriculum and helps prepare them for future education and employment. We want all children to develop their reading strategies and understand what they have read as well as develop an enjoyment for reading.

Our aim is that:

Children should develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
Children should be able to confidently apply their phonetical understanding to support them to read.
Children should acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
Children should appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
Children should read and re-read books to ensure fluency.
